Sliding into Denver’s Green Russell

Slipping into Denver’s Green Russell is like sliding down the rabbit hole with Alice, accompanied by Tom Waits. Located on Larimer Square, this subterranean “chef-driven cocktail joint” evokes a 1920s cocktail lounge.

First, however, you must know the protocol. Head down the stairs into Wednesday’s Pie, a tiny old-fashioned pie shop with black-and-white checkered floors that offers three kinds of mouth-watering pies daily. Enjoy your pie at the counter, seated atop a red barstool.

Then, once you’ve finished your pie, head through the stainless silver swinging door at the rear of the store – et voila, you’ve entered the dimly-lit Green Russell.

Named for the Georgian prospector who inaugurated the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush, Green Russell is an intimate and sexy cocktail joint that could easily be the home of both Al Capone and Dita Von Teese.

In keeping with the authentic atmosphere, cocktails are crafted with block ice, fresh herbs, pressed-to-order juices, and artisanal mixers. Bar snacks include mini pizzas and meatloaf – and yes, pie for dessert.

What could be sweeter?
