Matt the Thresher and the First Family

In the summer of 2013, this sleek and stylish seafood establishment located in the heart of Georgian Dublin hosted all three females of the First Family of the United States.

Named for its sibling restaurant, a well-loved gastro pub in Tipperary, this incarnation of Matt the Thresher is situated near St. Stephen’s Green and Fitzwilliam Square. Illuminated by skylights and stained glass during the day and by chandeliers in the evening, the large white dining room is complemented by a lengthy marble bar outfitted in brass.

The recipient of numerous accolades for seafood, all of which is sustainably sourced, the kitchen is helmed by New Zealand chef Yossa Auld. A fish counter at the room’s front displays the daily bounty, which is sourced from Irish harbors and prepared with an emphasis on simplicity and freshness.

During the winter months, the room is warmed by a fireplace, as well as, on certain evenings, the sounds of a jazz session.

Given the restaurant’s multiple awards, it’s likely that the next time the Obamas hit Matt the Thresher, the President won’t miss dinner.
